The Partial Pressure of Oxygen in the Blood during Progressively Induced Anoxemia
نویسنده
چکیده
We have studied the passage of oxygen through the pulmonary epithelium during progressively induced anoxemia.’ The dog is remarkably resistant to the effects of a lowered oxygen tension in the inspired air. He will maintain both respiration and an adequate circulation when breathing air containing from 3 to 4 per cent of oxygen. Man, on the other hand, becomes unconscious or “faints” when the oxygen is reduced to between 5 and 8 per cent. Data have not been reported regarding the relationship between the oxygen content of the inspired air which produces unconsciousness in man and that which leads to a stopping of respiration. Comparison, however, indicates that the dog is a most favorable animal for the experimental study of the mechanism controlling the passage of oxygen through the pulmonary epithelium. Two series of experiments were carried out in a study of the problem. Dogs were operated on under chloretone analgesia that did not suppress or weaken either respiratory or vascular reflexes. A “rebreather” apparatus was connected by a short tracheal tube and the animal was allowed progressively to exhaust the oxygen from the air enclosed in the system. The carbon dioxide was absorbed by potassium hydroxide and completely removed from the inhalant air. Graphic records of the blood pressure and the

The relationship between the arterial oxygen saturation and the cardiovascular response to induced anoxemia in normal young adults.
AT THE present time the most widely used method of studying the effect of induced anoxemia on the cardiovascular system consists of giving the subjects low oxygen gas (usually 10 per cent) inhalation for approximately twenty minutes and making observations during this period. In previous communications1'the variability of the degree of anoxemia, as measured by the blood arterial oxygen saturati...
متن کاملBlood oxygenation during hyperpressure intraperitoneal fluid administration in a rabbit model of severe liver injury: Evaluation of a novel concept for control of pre-hospital liver bleeding
Oxygen is an essential part of the most important metabolic pathways in aerobic organisms. Oxygen delivery is merely dependent on blood, rendering blood loss a devastating event. Traumatic pre-hospital liver bleeding is a major cause of early trauma deaths in human and animals, with no established therapeutic method yet. Increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) has been shown to reduce liver b...

During the performance of a series of anoxemia tests the oxygen saturation of the blood has been determined by means of the MIillikan oximeter. The levels of hypoxemia induced have been correlated with various other factors. The results are considered with particular reference to a possible critical range, within which changes in the circulation occur. T HE ANOXEMIA test for coronary in-suffici...
متن کاملRESPIRATORY PROPERTIES OF THE ARTERIAL BLOOD IN NOR - MAL MAN AND IN PATIENTS WITH DISEASE OF THE LIVER : POSITION OF THE OXYGEN DISSOCIATION CURVE By ANCEL KEYS AND ALBERT
It is now generally agreed that the oxygen saturation of the arterial blood in normal man in rest at low altitudes is remarkably constant. Until recently, subnormal arterial saturations could almost invariably be traced to obvious pulmonary or cardiac disorders. Recently, however, it was noted that relative arterial unsaturation is common among patients with cirrhosis of the liver and other con...
متن کاملA Computational Study of Oxygen Transport in the Body of Living Organism (RESEARCH NOTE)
Oxygen is an essential part of the living organism. It is transported from blood to the body tissue by the systematic circulation and large part of it is stored in the blood flowing in capillaries. In this work we discuss a mathematical model for oxygen transport in tissues. The governing equations are established assuming that the blood is flowing along a co-axial cylindrical capillary inside ...
